In 2010 everything you own that is worth more than a few dollars will know that it's yours, and you'll be able to find it whenever you want it. Stealing cars, furniture, stereos, or other valuables will be unusual, because any of your valuables that leave your house will check in on their way out the door, and scream like a troll's magic purse if removed without permission (they may scream at 2.4 GHz rather than in audio). "It's not just academic research. It will provide real data about what's happening at any moment." Source: SmartDust Predictions based on "Autonomous sensing and communication in a cubic millimeter." A group of great international speakers guide the participants through technical, social, cultural and political RFID issues. Participants make their own prototype of an RFID application or scenario, in which the virtual and the physical world are joined.
RFID plays a pivotal role in joining the physical world with the digital. An object tagged with an RFID chip has a unique digital identity. Any kind of online data can be linked to these unique ID's. Here is where the real world and the internet become two faces of the same reality. Things go online, in other words, an internet of things evolves. During the workshop participants can mould their ideas into working prototypes, allowing them to partake in the whole process; from 'idea' to (potential) 'product'. Workshop projects may range from new ways to personalise objects, to funny locative applications or world-wide sustainability scenario's. Mediamatics' RFID powered Symbolic Table as well as the Nokia 3220 RFID phone will be amongst the available tools for participants to use, test and play their ideas on.

The sheer volume of assets in a supply chain-many of which are reusable-is just the tip of the asset management challenge. So often timing is critical, as when a pipeline company ships components from multiple countries to a major project, with each shipment taking weeks or even months. If a crucial component misses the ship and that fact isn't discovered until unloading, then the entire project might slip weeks or months. www.alientechnology.com/ RFID assists in determining the location of valuable assets and the transit timing and condition, providing continual timely, actionable information. Enterprises in manufacturing, agriculture, retail, construction, equipment and fleet rentals, defense, aviation, fulfillment and more can all benefit from this ability to track, trace and know in real time.
